We spotted this lioness in the Topi area of Serengeti National Park, sitting quietly on a rocky outcrop. From this raised position, she could scan the surrounding landscape for prey, other lions and any movement in the distance.
Lions often use rocks and elevated ground as natural watchtowers. These spots give them a better view of their territory and can also provide some relief from the heat when the rock surface is cooler.
Lionesses are the main hunters of the pride and rely on patience, teamwork and careful positioning. Even while resting, they remain alert and ready to react.
For a few moments, she simply sat there, completely at ease, watching over the Serengeti from her rocky perch.
