A tiny elephant was found alone beneath a tree in Kenya, barely able to walk.
Serenget had suffered a serious gunshot wound to her leg, believed to be connected to human-wildlife conflict. When rescuers found her in July 2025, she was thin, frightened and could only hobble a few steps.
Her recovery was incredibly difficult. Serenget initially refused milk, even though she was still young enough to need it. Keepers eventually discovered that she would drink when milk was carefully poured into the tip of her trunk, allowing her to slowly feed herself.
Then came the moment everyone had been waiting for. In February 2026, Serenget was introduced to her new elephant family, where older elephants gently placed their trunks over her head and back. After everything she survived, the frightened little calf finally had a herd again.
