A bear walking through a forest may look calm, but people should never assume that a wild bear is safe simply because it isn't immediately aggressive. Bears can react defensively when surprised or when they believe they or their young are threatened.
The most frightening encounters often happen unexpectedly on trails, near campsites or around food. A person may suddenly realize that a huge animal is much closer than expected.
That's why bear footage can be so gripping. There is a powerful psychological moment when the camera stops being an observer and suddenly feels like it is standing inside the animal's territory.
