This Baby Elephant Survived Storms, a Lion Attack—and Being Alone
Some elephant calves are rescued just in time. Bungalu's story was different. The orphaned calf survived weeks alone in the Kenyan bush, facing severe storms and even a lion attack before rescuers finally brought him to safety. His story shows just how dangerous life can be for a young elephant without its herd.
At the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust's Nairobi nursery, Bungalu began the long process of recovery. For a rescued calf, survival is not simply about treating injuries. Caretakers must also provide food, protection, companionship, and the social environment an elephant needs while it grows.
What makes Bungalu's story so powerful is the contrast between his terrifying beginning and the hope of his new life. From hiding and surviving alone in the wilderness to receiving care from humans, every healthy step forward represents another chance to eventually return to an elephant family and the wild.
