A safari can feel peaceful until an elephant suddenly decides that a vehicle or person has entered its space. Elephants are enormous, intelligent animals, but their size does not make them predictable. A defensive charge can happen extremely quickly, leaving people with very little time to react.
The situation can become especially tense when an elephant is protecting a calf. Mothers and other members of the herd may respond aggressively to perceived threats, while solitary males can also become dangerous when displaying territorial or mating-related behavior.
Videos of elephants chasing safari vehicles regularly attract millions of views because the scale difference is incredible: a relatively small vehicle faces an animal weighing several tons. The footage is exciting, but it also demonstrates why safari guides emphasize staying inside vehicles and maintaining a safe distance.
