These Baby Elephants Are Being Raised for One Goal: Freedom
In Zambia, rescue teams care for elephant calves who have lost their mothers and herds. At the Lusaka Elephant Nursery, keepers provide food, medical attention, companionship, and daily walks designed to help young elephants develop the strength and skills they need.
The goal is not to keep the elephants dependent on people forever. Instead, the rehabilitation process is designed to prepare them for a return to a more natural life. As they grow, the elephants can move toward release facilities where they have opportunities to become increasingly independent.
Every forest walk therefore means more than exercise. It is part of a much bigger journey—from orphaned calf to independent elephant. For the keepers, success ultimately means seeing an animal they cared for walk away and no longer need them.
