African rivers can look peaceful from a distance, but beneath the surface and along the shoreline, several powerful predators and herbivores compete for space. Among the most intimidating residents are the hippopotamus and Nile crocodile.
A crocodile may approach a young or vulnerable animal near the water, but a nearby hippo can quickly become involved. Hippos are highly territorial around water and can react aggressively when they believe another animal has entered their space.
Their enormous mouths and powerful bodies make hippos formidable opponents. A crocodile may have an advantage in the water, but a large adult hippo is capable of dominating the shoreline.
This is why encounters between the two species are so fascinating to watch. Neither animal needs to be hunting the other for conflict to occur; simply being too close can create a confrontation.
The river therefore becomes a battlefield where size, territory and timing matter. One moment the animals may appear to ignore each other, and the next a sudden movement can send the entire scene into chaos.
