Another group of rescued elephants is preparing for one of the biggest moments of their lives. Reteti announced in July 2026 that its next release herd consists of 10 orphaned elephants in northern Kenya who are preparing to return to the wild.
For these elephants, freedom doesn't happen overnight. Years of rehabilitation, social development and preparation are needed before an orphan can become independent enough to live in the wild. Reteti's previous releases demonstrate how carefully the process is managed.
The most emotional moment will come when the gates finally open. The keepers who once carried bottles of milk to the young elephants may have to stand back and watch them walk away. But that goodbye will mean the rescue worked—the elephants are ready to become wild again.
