🐘 Tong Urai: A 40-Year-Old Elephant Finally Gets to Rest

After Years in the Riding Industry, This Elephant Finally Got a Peaceful Home

Tong Urai, a 40-year-old elephant from Surin province, began a completely different chapter of life after being rescued in June 2025. She had spent years working in Phuket's elephant-riding tourism industry before her owners contacted Phuket Elephant Sanctuary when the camp where she worked closed.

Her first days at the sanctuary were not easy. She showed signs of stress and frequently swayed, a behavior that can be associated with distress in captive elephants. The sanctuary gave her time, space, health checks, and a quiet environment while she slowly adjusted.

Then came the transformation. Tong Urai began exploring the forest and gradually connecting with other elephants. After decades of work, she finally had the opportunity to experience something simple but powerful: freedom to move, rest, explore, and live without performing for people.
