An elephant standing beside a safari vehicle can look completely peaceful. But when the enormous animal feels threatened or believes its space has been invaded, its behavior can change dramatically.
Elephants sometimes perform warning or mock charges, but distinguishing a warning from a serious charge can be difficult for inexperienced observers. A safari vehicle may suddenly become the focus of an elephant's attention, creating a frightening few seconds for everyone inside.
The lesson is simple: size does not make an animal predictable. The safest wildlife encounters happen when people allow animals plenty of space and let experienced guides interpret their behavior.
