🐘 13 Orphans Walk Back Into the Wild

For 13 rescued elephants, years of rehabilitation finally led to one unforgettable moment. In June 2024, a group of orphaned elephants from Reteti Elephant Sanctuary took their first steps back into the wild.

The release was the result of years of work. Many orphaned elephants arrive at sanctuaries after losing their families because of drought, poaching or human-wildlife conflict. They first need intensive care before they can begin learning the skills necessary for a wild life.

At Reteti, the elephants are raised by Samburu keepers who become surrogate parents during their early years. As they grow older, the animals gradually learn to spend more time in natural surroundings and with other elephants.

The 13 elephants' return was therefore not the end of their story. It was the beginning of another chapter—one in which they would have to navigate the landscape with increasing independence.

For the keepers, the moment was undoubtedly emotional. They had invested years of care into these animals, but the ultimate purpose of that care was to make themselves less necessary. Watching a rescued elephant walk away into the wild can be the most meaningful goodbye of all.
