🐘 Bawa Was Almost Given No Chance — But He Survived

When Bawa arrived at Reteti, he was barely clinging to life. The tiny elephant was estimated to be no more than two weeks old when he became trapped and submerged in mud near Maralal, Kenya. By the time rescuers reached him, he was severely dehydrated and dangerously thin.

His condition was heartbreaking. Bawa had swallowed a large amount of mud, his skin was peeling, and his eyes had been damaged after staring toward the sun for hours. His rescuers were facing a calf whose condition was so severe that recovery seemed uncertain.

But the team refused to give up. For approximately 48 hours, caretakers worked continuously, providing oxygen, fluids and intensive medical support. Every hour mattered because a calf this young has very little ability to survive without its mother.

Weeks of patient care eventually began to change everything. Bawa became stronger and was eventually able to walk with the other elephants. Another elephant named Shaba became especially close to him, staying beside him as he learned how to move and socialize with the herd.

Bawa's story became much more than a rescue story. It became a story of survival. The calf who arrived near death eventually grew into a healthy young elephant who could play in the mud with his companions—a remarkable transformation made possible by dedicated rescue workers and elephant companionship.
