Across the African savanna, zebras must remain alert to the presence of lions, one of their major natural predators. A lion may stalk a zebra herd through tall grass, waiting for an opportunity to approach an animal that has become separated from the others.
When the chase begins, the zebra relies on speed, sharp turns, and powerful kicks to escape. A cornered or threatened zebra can strike with its hind legs, making a close-range attack dangerous for even a strong lion. The struggle may change direction in an instant as both animals fight for survival.
These encounters demonstrate the constant balance between predator and prey. Lions depend on successful hunts for food, while zebras use vigilance, herd behavior, and powerful defensive movements to avoid becoming a meal.
