In cold coastal waters, seals must watch for orcas, also known as killer whales. These intelligent marine mammals hunt in groups in some regions, using communication and coordinated movements to locate and capture prey.
When orcas pursue a seal, the chase can unfold rapidly through waves or around floating ice. Depending on the population and hunting technique, orcas may use teamwork to isolate prey or take advantage of the seal’s limited escape routes. For the seal, reaching shore or finding a safe refuge can be critical.
Such encounters illustrate how complex marine food webs can be. Orcas are skilled predators, but their diets and hunting strategies vary between populations, and not every orca group hunts seals.
